Netflix Getting Ready to Launch Cheaper Mobile-Only Plans in India


Netflix has announced that it will be rolling out a new lower-priced mobile-only plan for the Indian market. Prior to this, in the month of March, Nextflix said it was testing an Rs.250 mostly subscription plan for mobile devices in India. The data plans in India are among the cheapest in the world and Netflix new plan is aimed at offering cheaper plans when compared to Amazon’s Prime Video and Hotstar.

In a letter that Netflix sent to its shareholders, it said that “After several months of testing, we’ve decided to roll out a lower-priced mobile-screen plan in India to complement our existing plans”. It also mentioned that they believe this plan will be launching in their quarter and will be an effective way to introduce a larger number of people in India to Netflix and to expand their business further in a market where Pay-TV ARPU is low. It also mentioned that it will continue to learn more after launching this new plan.

As of now, Netflix is offering three months plan in India for plans between Rs. 500 and Rs. 800. On the other hand, Hotstar is offering content from AT&T’s HBP and straws live sports for a price of Rs. 299 per month. Amazon also offers video as well as music services via its Prime membership. The announcement from Netflix was a part of its quarterly results in which it reported lower-than-expected subscribers additions.
