The upcoming 2019 year appears to be a foray into 5G connectivity primarily in smartphones. Several manufacturers have already been proclaiming their smartphones will be 5G capable, recently a report stated OnePlus is launching a new 5G lineup of smartphones altogether next year. While Qualcomm has already unveiled its X50 5G modem earlier this year, the other tech giant of computing Intel has revealed its new 5G modem – the Intel XMM 8160 5G Multimode Modem.
Intel claims that the new 5G modem is optimized to provide 5G connectivity across all devices including Phones, PCs, and Broadband access gateways. The new XMM 8160 5G is expected to come in second-half of 2019 that supports speeds of up to 6 Gbps, which is technically 3-6 times faster to the current LTE connectivity. The multimode modem handles new standard for 5G New Radio (NR) including standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes, along with 4G, 3G and 2G legacy radios in a single chipset.
As stated earlier, the new XMM 8160 5G modem is scheduled to ship next year, and as for the commercial devices, the 5G modem utilizing devices are expected to come in the first-half of 2020. What this means is that since Apple had already adapted to the Intel modem chips with its latest iPhones line-up, we can expect the new 5G iPhone to be unveiled not until 2020. On the other hand, the popular Android Device manufacturers like – Samsung, Nokia, Sony, Xiaomi for instance, are already in talks with Qualcomm to launch their 5G enabled phones with the new Snapdragon X50 5G NR modems. And, manufacturers like Huawei and Samsung are reportedly working on their 5G modems as well.
Lastly, we can expect the introduction to 5G from major brands next year and most likely by the year 2020, all the manufacturers including Apple might release their 5G-enabled flagship smartphones.
